Some DJs out there (maybe you) go old school with their mixing; they're still using traditional vinyl turntables. However, what are records? Why are they important for the DJ? In this article, you will learn a little bit more about records and find a bit more appreciation for the analog format.
Vinyl records are quite literally vinyl
Vinyl records are given that name because they are quite literally made out of vinyl material. Vinyl is melted down and then pressed into a master recording plate which gives the grooves of the record so it can replicate the sound. There aren't many companies that create vinyl still but there are some still out there.
Vinyl is nostalgic and has a hands on feel
The reason why most analog DJs prefers vinyl over digital and CD is that it has a nostalgia to the format. Vinyl has been around since the beginning of DJing and so there's a certain stigma to staying true to the original format. Additionally, vinyl has complete hands on feel when mixing which many people love and can't give up.
Are vinyl records right for your DJing?
Although you've learned a few things about records, you should probably ask the bigger question: "Is vinyl right for you?" The answer is up to you but do know this: vinyl is often more expensive but, on the flip side, does hold its value as communities have sprung up solely dedicated to collecting vinyl. If you choose to go vinyl, you can still use digital controllers and additional equipment for your mix; now that you know what vinyl is, you'll be able to properly choose which type of DJ you become.
